Studies

Maria Papapavlou is Professor of Ethnomusicology-Musics of the Mediterranean at the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She was born in Switzerland and studied piano and music theory at the National Conservatory of Athens. She holds a degree from the Department of Philosophy and Social Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Crete (1994) and a PhD from the Institut für Ethnologie of the University of Leipzig, Germany (2000).

 

Academic Career

She is being teaching at the University of Athens since 2005 and has taught in several Universities in Greece (University of Thrace, University of Thessali, University of Crete and abroad (University of Leipzig, Germany and Norwegian University, Trondheim).

 

Research interests

Maria Papapavlou conducted extended fieldwork among Gitanos and non Gitanos flamenco artists in Andalusia (Spain). She also conducted fieldwork in the city of Rethymno in Crete investigating the relations between emigrants and the local community, as well as the role of carnival music and dance in the construction of identities. In Athens she conducted field research at Syntagma Square during the 2011 occupy movement focusing on the role of music with contemporary social movements. Her current research interests include the relationship between music and the transcendental, the phenomenology of music and sound, and the historical and ethnographic interactions of Musics of western Mediterranean.
