Department of Music Studies


She was born in 1944 in Volos. In 1985 she founded and has since edited the journal Musicologia. Ph.D. in Music Aesthetics (on Beethoven’s sonatas and aesthetic theory of German idealism) from the University of Frankfurt. She was a pupil of Th. W. Adorno, Ludwig Finscher and Herbert Schnädelbach. She introduced and cultivated Adorno’s work on musical aesthetics in Greece. Professor at the Music Department of the University of Athens, and consultant on Greek music for the encyclopaedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG). Founding member of Greek Society of Comparative Literature; consultant at the Music Library of Greece “Lilian Voudouri”; consultant and writer in the editions Lettres Européennes. Histoire de la littérature européenne (Hachette, Paris 1992) and Storia universale della musica (A. Mondadori, Milano 1982). Fields of research: western musicology, musical aesthetics, sociology and philosophy, music pedagogy, and 19th- and 20th-century Greek music. Publications (selection): The Aesthetic Interpretation of the Musical Work, Pyli, Athens 1978; Einführung in Probleme der Musikästhetik, Wilhelmshaven, Heinrichshofen 1981; The Greek National School of Music: Problems of Ideology, Foundation for Mediterranean Studies, Athens 1990. Numerous articles (including the entry “Griechenland” in MGG2), essays, commentaries in recordings and for concert and opera programmes, lectures, contributions in congresses in Greece and abroad, as well as series of emissions about aesthetics and Adorno’s musical aesthetics in Greek Broadcast (3rd Programme, Athens).
