Studies
Born in Athens (1959).
-Studied the Law at the University of Athens (1977-1981).
-Piano with George Daskoulis. Theory of Western Music at the Hellenic Conservatory of Athens and with Yannis Ioannidis.
-Byzantine Music and Greek Folk Music with Simon Karras.
-Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology of Southeast Europe with Paul-Henri Stahl and Ethnomusicology with Claudie Marcel-Dubois and Magie Andral at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris-France (1981-1986, with a scholarship of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation).
Academic Career
He taught (407/80) in the Faculty of Social Anthropology of the Aegean University (1989-1992).
In 1992 he was elected assistant professor, in 1998 associate professor and in 2009 professor of Ethnomusicology at the Faculty of Music Studies of the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He is Head of the Sector of Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology.
Scientific Interests
His research interests include the Traditional Greek Music (with an emphasis on the local musical dialects and the folk musical instruments), the Urban Folk Music (Rebetiko, Greek shadow-theater) and the Modern Greek Song. He also works on Museology, archives-organization and Cultural Management. He has conducted field researches and musical recordings throughout Greece and the Greek-speaking villages of Southern Italy. He collaborated with Fivos Anoyanakis in the founding of the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments-Centre for Ethnomusicology, of which he was the President (1991-2014).
From 1995 to 2004 he was the general co-ordinator (along with Lucia Droulia) and director of the music group in the research project “Musical tradition: Thrace-Eastetn Macedonia” of the “Friends of Music Society” and collaborated at the establishment of the relevant archive and database in the “Music Library of Greece Lilian Voudouri” (www.mmb.org.gr).
He has edited books, recordings, cd-rom and documentary films, and organised exhibitions, conferences, educational programs, festivals, concerts and music theater performances concerning the Greek music in Greece and abroad.

He also taught the seminars "Methodology of the ethnomusicological field-research" and "Music in the Greek shadow-theater".
At the same time, he teaches the course "Music and Cultural Management" in the Post-Graduate Program of the Faculty of Music Studies and in the Interdepartmental Post-Graduate Program, in association with the Faculty of Communication and Mass Media.

Artistic Interests
He organized festivals, concerts and music-theater performances throughout Greece and all over the world (Cyprus, Italy, Spain, France, Monaco, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Uzbekistan, India, China, Vietnam, USA and Australia), in collaboration with institutions such as the Presidency of the Republic, the Hellenic Parliament, the Ministries of Culture, Education and Foreign Affairs, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, the Athens and Thessaloniki Concert Halls, the Greek Cultural Foundation, the European Cultural Centre of Delphi, the Cultural Olympiad, the International Olympic Committee, the European Parliament, Unesco, the Greek National Television etc.
He was the artistic director of the performance “Olympia and Athens Greet Beijing”, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Festival of Beijing in China (2008).
He is a producer of radio and TV broadcastings on the Greek and foreign folk music. The “Salt of the Earth – To Alati tis Gis” is the longest running broadcasting of its kind (since 1981), and since 2012 is presented as a regular TV-show on the Public Television ERT1.
He also worked on research, music editing, text writing and artistic direction in performances of ancient drama ( "Ecclesiasouses" at the Ancient Epidaurus Theatre), of opera and musical-theater (National Opera, Athens Concert Hall, National Theater of Northern Greece, Badminton Theater etc) and contemporary dance (“Roes” dance-theater). He wrote and directed a theatrical performance based on the narration of the Izmir singer Angela Papazoglou, performed by Anna Vagena. He was the writer and artistic director of the performances of Greek Operetta at the Greek National Opera (2007-2011).
