Department of Music Studies

ABOUT

The Department of Music Studies, funded in 1991, is part of the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and is located in the University Campus in Zographou area.

The Department of Music Studies is committed to high standards for teaching and education, covering a range of scientific fields. The coexistence of diverse scientific disciplines and epistemological directions in the Department creates an academic environment conducive to music studies, adhering to current international academic standards. The Department offers a broad curriculum focused on critical thinking and interdisciplinarity. During their studies, students acquire scientific reasoning by combining music theory and practice. They approach Greek music from a broad and critical perspective in its historical entirety, comprising ancient, byzantine religious and secular, folk and popular, European, electroacoustic music etc.  

The Department of Music Studies is divided into three sectors: 1. Sector of Historical and Systematic Musicology, 2. Sector of Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology, 3. Sector of Sound Technology, Music Education, and Byzantine Musicology. In addition, further four (4) areas of specializations are offered: 1. Historical Musicology - Systematic Musicology, 2. Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology, 3. Music Acoustics and Sound Technology, 4. Byzantine Musicology.

The Department offers a five - year undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree in Music Studies. Upon the completion of the undergraduate programme students are granted an Integrated Master’s Degree on one of the areas of specializations offered (Level 7, National and European Qualification Framework). Graduates can apply to the Department’s postgraduate programme (Master’s degree).

The Departments curriculum also emphasizes music pedagogy. Students’ teaching adequacy is secured via a number of relevant courses and practical training. Alumni of this programme, having acquired a soundly based interdisciplinary foundation in music and musicology, can be accepted in national and international graduate programs, not only in musicology, but also in other relevant areas (anthropology of music, technology and informatics, psychology, music pedagogy, music therapy etc.).     

Finally, the Department has a strong record of completed doctoral theses and important number of enrolled PhD students, in all of its Sectors.
