CIVIS

CIVIS is a European Civic University formed by the alliance of eight leading research higher education institutions across Europe:

Aix-Marseille Université,
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens,
Universitatea din București,
Université libre de Bruxelles,
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid,
Sapienza Università di Roma,
Stockholm University and
Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen.

It brings together a community of more than 384,000 students and 55,000 staff members including 30,000 academics and researchers.

CIVIS aims to create a truly unique European interuniversity campus where students, academics, researchers and staff will move and collaborate as freely as within their institution of origin. It will develop a deep level of European integration, involving joint learning pathways, development of complementary research facilities and diverse degree pathways.

CIVIS will unite efforts and experiences to develop a European University with strong links to its local social and geographical environment and an orientation toward global challenges. It will contribute to the social, cultural and economic dynamism at both a local and global scale.

Goals:

  • Implementing a strong, integrated and legitimate governance and administrative structure
  • Creating new ambitious and European recognised joint educational programmes at BA, MA and PhD level
  • Increasing student mobility between partner universities
  • Strengthening quality assurance and facilitating the recognition of qualifications and periods of study, in order to increase compatibility between our education systems to make it easier for students to move within Europe.
  • Supporting multilingualism and multiculturalism
  • Establishing and deepening European partnerships and partnerships with the Mediterranean area and Africa in the fields of research, education, and innovation (as the Mediterranean area and Africa will be at the core of the global strategy of the CIVIS alliance).
  • Reinforcing existing research links between universities through interdisciplinarity, shared research infrastructures and incentive funding for joint projects.
  • Reinforcing innovative pedagogies
  • Reinforcing the idea of making educational resources open and accessible to all in line with Open Science and Open Educational Resources frames.
  • Working with associated partners, both local and European, who will support the actions of the Alliance and participate in the development of new initiatives.
