Grigorios Anastasiou is Associate Professor of Byzantine Musicology at the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UOA) and Scientific Director of the Institute of Byzantine Musicology of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Music Studies of the University of Athens. His doctoral dissertation, supervised by Professor Gregorios Stathis, was titled “The Kratemata in the Psaltic Art” (published in Athens, 2005).
He also holds a degree in Theology from the corresponding department of UOA and has been trained in the Organization of Historical Archives and the Electronic Processing of Archival Material. Additionally, he holds a Diploma in Byzantine Music from the Chalkida Conservatory.
He teaches courses in Byzantine Musicology and the Psaltic Art at the Department of Music Studies of the University of Athens, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has taught at the European University Cyprus and has occasionally participated in numerous specialized seminars and training programs organized by academic, ecclesiastical, or artistic institutions in Greece and abroad (Albania, USA, Italy, Romania, Czech Republic, etc.).
He frequently participates in local and international musicological and Byzantine studies conferences, either as a speaker or as a member of scientific and organizing committees.
Research Interests
His diverse scholarly publications, conference presentations, lectures, and overall research interests revolve around issues of history, morphology, ontology, and interpretation of the Psaltic Art.
Artistic Activity
His steady focus lies in the preservation and teaching of Psaltic Art as a performative liturgical tradition. Since 2005, he has served in this scope as protopsaltis (lead chanter) at the Church of Saint Marina in Ano Ilisia, where he also directs the local School of Byzantine Music and the choir “Ilissiotes Psaltes”.
He has performed frequently as a soloist (monophonaris) in musical events related to the Psaltic Art and Contemporary Art Music, both in Greece and abroad.
