ANESTIS BARBATSIS

He was born in 1976 in Agrinio. Growing up listening to folk and traditional music, at the age of 12, he starts playing bouzouki. At the same time, he attends Byzantine music lessons, which he later completes with a degree (Katsareios School of Ioannina).

He graduated from the Department of Folk & Traditional Music of TEI of Epirus (2008) and the School of Management and Economics of Technological Educational Institute of Patras (1999). He completed his postgraduate studies in the programme "Music Arts - Greek Music Traditions - Interpretation and Performance" at the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia (2018). He completed his doctoral thesis at the same department: The published and unpublished musical work of Dimitris Gogos-Bagianderas. Musical transcription and analysis (2024), which was evaluated with a grade of excellent.

Since 1994 he has been working as a musician and since 2002, he has been teaching bouzouki in Music Schools (Agrinio, Ilion, Thessaloniki, Sparta). From 2014 until today, he teaches at the Music School of Piraeus.

His research interest concerns urban folk music traditions, approaching the study of the material, using musicological tools and criteria.

He had the idea-research of the documentary Broken Sound (2022) and conducted the interviews of the bouzouki players and other speakers. The documentary won an audience award at the 24th Thessaloniki International Festival.
