IOANNIS VAGIANOS

Ioannis Vagianos is a bassist, composer, and educator active in both the Greek and Dutch jazz scenes. He holds a Master of Music (Jazz Contrabass) degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Contrabass) from Codarts University of the Arts, and a Mechanical Engineering Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens (Master of Science).

Born and raised in Athens, after completing his studies at NTUA, he moved to the Netherlands to study Jazz Performance. During his time in the Netherlands, he was an active member of various projects covering a wide range of musical genres, including traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, classical music, Turkish music, Latin, and more. He has extensive experience with international tours both within and outside of Europe (China, Denmark, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany, among others).

His rich discography includes the album Schema from his personal project Tangent Quartet and the album ARBOR from the homonymous project he co-leads alongside guitarist Michalis Tsiftsis. Additionally, he has participated in various albums as a supporting musician. He was awarded 2nd Prize at the Franco Ambrosetti Jazz Award 2022 with his band Tangent Quartet. He performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2023 with the band Merem.

As an active educator, he teaches double bass, electric bass, music theory, and jazz ensembles. His teaching experience includes a semester of university-level work at the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University through the Erasmus+ program, where he served as a jazz ensemble instructor and assistant double bass instructor. Additionally, he worked for three years at the Dutch conservatory Major7 as a jazz ensemble, double bass, and electric bass instructor.
