GIORGOS KITSIOS

Assistant Professor

Sector: Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology

Graduate of the Department of Music Studies of the University of Athens. In 2006, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the same Department, titled: "Aspects and Transformations of an Urban Music Culture (Ioannina, late 19th century – 1924): A Historical Ethnomusicological Approach" (Supervisor: Professor Pavlos Kavouras). He holds degrees in Orchestration (Instrumentation) and Fugue, as well as a Violin Diploma (Orfeio Conservatory, class of Sofoklis Politis). He was a fellow of the Japanese SYLFF program (Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund – Tokyo Foundation). He has worked on research projects for the Athens Megaron Concert Hall, the University of Athens, and the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH). He served as an adjunct member of the Greek National Opera Symphony Orchestra and as an deputy violin teacher at the Music School of Piraeus. He has also worked as a deputy music teacher in general junior high schools and as a permanent teacher in primary education. He has participated in several Greek and international discography releases, and has also recorded music for theater and cinema.

  • 1994-1995: Founding member and Vice President of the editorial board of the magazine "MOY.S.A."

  • 1997-1999: Member of the research project "THRACE" of the Athens Concert Hall Organization (http://epth.sfm.gr). [Coordinator: Loukia Droulia]

  • 1999 (1st semester): Fellow at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) and member of the research project "THALITAS" focusing on "The Violin Tradition in Cretan Folk Music" (see thalitas.ims.forth.gr/portal).   • 2004-2005: Fellow of the Japanese SYLFF program (Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund - Tokyo Foundation).

  • 2007 (Spring semester): Lecturer (under Presidential Decree 407/80) at the Department of Music Studies of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Course title: "Specialized Fields of Ethnomusicology: Historical Ethnomusicology".
